Australia Search With Environmental Vision
LocalRunner is a local search concept that's more about environmental protection than profits!
The enterprise is owned and run by Nimbin locals. Nimbin has long been the home of counter-culture in Australia. While Nimbin is probably best known (infamous!) for its annual mardi grass festival it is also home to a lot of forward thinking on the environmental front.
The LocalRunner vision is a string of online communities where local products and services can be sourced with ease. The environmental benefits of such a system are simply enormous...
Whatever your current belief on the climate change issue one thing is absolutely certain -- we will have to face up to the issue sooner or later. The population of planet Earth is growing rapidly. Unless new breakthroughs in energy production arrive soon we will hit the wall. It's that simple.
We cannot sit by and hope for these scientific breakthroughs. We need to attack climate change with more than just science. There has to be societal shift as well.
A quick example... Australians tend to drive everywhere and anywhere! As a nation we're in love with the motor car. And why not? We have big distances to travel. As anyone who lives in rural regional Australia knows public transport is non-existant. We're simply dependent on motor cars.
Some argue for the increase of public transport services. But public transport is inefficient for rural areas. The solution then is in the way we manage and use private transport.
...One potential solution is car pooling.
A part of LocalRunner's vision is to provide local online communities with the tools to enable local car pooling to work efficiently. The means to search for vehicles headed your direction at the right time of day. A way to share the information and make contact with like-minded community members to share the load, effectively helping both the environment and community members.
Fact is car pooling CAN work for rural regional areas. We just need the tools to implement the solution.
Localization - the strengthening of local communities is the antidote for globalization and the environmental disaster it's causing.
